Living in cities better supports human flourishing?

This post is really an ad.

Yes, I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again. You are welcome to come and teach me why living in cities is better for human flourishing than living in agrarian or isolated mountaintop, desert or tropical island settings. I highlight two Bible verses here:

Joh 17:15-16
(15)  I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
(16)  They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

It seems to be commonly accepted that humans flourish better when they live in cities, and when those numbers are in the millions. This is supposedly so because more people means more ideas and therefore we get better ideas from more interaction and therefore greater human flourishing. Even Thomas Sowell seems to think so.

I contend that we have not looked at the downsides sufficiently. Have a look at the two Bible verses above, never mind whether you are a Christian or not. If Christians are to be witnesses unto the world so that the Good News of salvation from sin and attaining unto everlasting life are to be better spread, does it follow that Christians should flock to cities? If you are not a Christian and you would like to participate in this training exercise, think along similar lines.

In one hour comprising twenty minutes of you presenting why living in cities is far better for human flourishing to me, and forty minutes of Q & A, during which eight questions arising from your presentation need to be answered in sufficient detail by you. This hour may be conducted over ZOOM or in person, details to be worked out if you decide to participate. There is no change to the fee, which is SGD 100. The exercise will start when payment is received.

Contact me if you would like to participate.
